Marc Anthony sings God Bless America and people are dumb

At the All-Star game Marc Anthony sang “God Bless America”. Probably during the 7th inning stretch, I don’t know since I was watching at a bar with friends and wasn’t really paying attention to anything but the game. I didn’t know he sang it until I read about the racist backlash on twitter. Since then I have watched the below video. I would LOVE for the Yankees to get a tape of this and play it at Yankees Stadium every 7th inning. Pretty hot ……… Where was I?

Oh yes, racist backlash on twitter, specifically people being outraged that a Mexican was singing AMERICA’S SONG at AMERICA’s PASTIME. For more WTF tweets check out Public Shaming. My only complaint is the title refers to baseball fans being super angry which could give some people the impression that all baseball fans are racist, which isn’t true.

Let me think about this, suppose Marc Anthony is Mexican (he’s not), isn’t Mexico in North America? No, it’s in Central America, isn’t that still America? So technically he would be an American if he was Mexican, except he’s not, he was born in NYC. His reply to these stupid comments was, “There’s no one more New York than me. I was honored to be asked to sing.” But he’s of Puerto Rican descent, which doesn’t change anything, even if he had been born in Puerto Rico he would still be considered a citizen of the U.S.

Did these people forget that the U.S. is a country of immigrants? “God Bless America” was written by Irving Berlin, born Israel (or Isadore) Baline who immigrated with his family to New York from Temun Russia in 1888. And America’s game? The Home Run Derby was won by Yoenis Céspedes who is from Cuba, who learned to play baseball in Cuba. The MVP of the All Star Game was Mariano Rivera, who besides being the greatest relief pitcher and closer in baseball is beloved and respected by most people. I’ve even had Red Sox fans (who hate the Yankees) tell me, “Even Red Sox fans respect Mariano”. Mariano Rivera is from Panama, he learned to play baseball in Panama. Cause guess what? Baseball is played in other countries, some close like Cuba and Panama, some far away like Taiwan and Korea.

By the way, this post was written by an American of Spanish descent.

getting ready for the Yankees, Princess style

Everyone has a routine before they go to a ball game, I get my nails done. Oh all right, I get my nails done every two weeks.

But when I’m going to a game, I make sure I get them painted blue. This time Esther suggested blue tips with a white stripe.

Someone told me there was no “nails” in baseball, hey I may be totally obsessed with baseball, but I am still 100% girl.

Monday, August 2, 2010 ~ Another sad anniversary

~~Blue Jays 8, Yankees 6~~

Today is the anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson. I didn’t know him. What I mean by that is I have no memories of him from when he was alive, like I have memories of other famous people. Back then, I barely knew who the Yankees were. I knew they had a pitcher named Catfish Hunter and not much else.

What I know I learned from watching Yankeeography and Yankees Classics. From reading articles and blogs. I do remember that last year, Jorge had the #15 on his mask on August 2. I watched game 5 of the 1976 ALCS, and Thurman Munson got hit in the throat with a foul ball, he didn’t leave the game. He would have played even if he had a broken foot. The game was that important. Click the link below for a very moving blog post about him.

As for todays game, there is not much to say, the only inning I watched was the 5th inning. Oh A.J., you know I love you, but I don’t know what to say.

6/23 NY Yankees 6 @ Arizona Diamondbacks 5 ~ More proof that Mariano is …. well, Mariano

Another series win. I didn’t watch this game, in fact, I can’t remember the last full game I watched. I will shoot for this Friday since that is the first game against the Dodgers, a team I absolutely hate. OK hate is a strong word, but I really really really don’t like them.

Also it seems I have started typing one post per series instead of per game, that is also not intentional. Tonight I was so tired, and it was a late game. I set my alarm and laid down for a nap. My alarm went off, I snoozed it a couple times, then shut it off. I woke up around 12:30 or so (not sure of the time so don’t jump on me) and thought, the Yankees can win this without me. Then I looked at the score, NYY 4, Ari 5. I also remembered I still had my contacts in. So I got up to take out my contacts and sat down to watch the game.

It was the eighth inning, I got to see the Yankees tie the game up, Cervelli get called out on strikes and yell at the umpire. Curtis Granderson hit the game winning home run in the 10th inning. Then Mo came in to end it, well actually, he pitched the 9th so he was already in the game, he even batted. (All the while I was praying, Please don’t get hurt) Then in the bottom of the 10th a couple of D-Backs got hits, now also on my hate list, Arizona Diamondbacks. After an intentional walk it was bases loaded and no outs. I couldn’t breath, I couldn’t watch, anybody else … but it was Mo, and Mariano did what Mariano does best. Next 3 batters, 1, 2, 3. Game over, Yankees win.

5/23 NY Yankees 4 @ NY Mets 6 (Why I'm Afraid to Look at my Twitter News Feed)

I left my phone downstairs while I was upstairs watching the game. When I came downstairs I looked at the number of tweets. 52 tweets. That is not even everybody on Twitter that I follow. So now I am afraid to open my Twitter account. Does anyone think I am stupid for believing that with that many unread tweets my computer will explode? How about my head?

Yankees were down 6 runs by the 7th inning, 7th inning they scored 1 run, 9th inning 3 runs. So they rallied, too little too late again. Kasey says she figured it out, they are afraid of getting hit by pitches. I think they are just a little worn out, not used to playing everyday and have to play 17 or 18 days in a row. One might argue that they had a day off in there, but the next day they had to pitch a double header!

I sincerely believe that when they get their second wind, they will be fine.
