Yankees 9, Mariners 3 ~ Monday, September 12, 2011

~~ Yankees 9, mariners 3 ~~

Yay for run support for Phil Hughes. He pitched pretty well, giving up 1 run in 6 innings pitched while Scott Proctor (who I know nothing about except he has a 6.49 ERA) gave up 2 runs in 2 innings. Then Ayala pitched the ninth. No Mo tonight.

Mark and Chris Dickerson hit home runs, which reminds me I need to update my page and send Harlem RBI some more money. Chris Dickerson also stole a base.

Double Header ~ Game 1 ~ Saturday, July 30, 2011

~~ Yankees 8, Orioles 3 ~~

This is what we like to see, Colon pitching, Nick hitting home runs, Yankees stealing bases and making errors! Wait, what? Sorry Nunez. And I would like to introduce to you the Yankees new closer, Boone Logan! That last bit was a joke. No closer needed for this game.

Bleacher Creatures ~ Sunday, June 26, 2011

It was the 65th annual Old-Timers’ Day with a host of former world champions, All-Stars and Hall of Famers. Former managers Joe Torre and Lou Piniella made their long-awaited return to Yankee Stadium in uniform, as did former center fielder Bernie Williams for his first Old-Timers’ experience. Before the game there was a tribute to Gene Monahan, who is retiring after this year. In a post game interview, you could tell that he was not used to talking to the press and a little overwhelmed.

Tino Martinez played the star in the annual Old-Timers’ Day game, hitting a two-run home run off David Cone for the only runs in the Bombers’ 2-0 victory over the Clippers.

Bernie Williams was in center field, Monument Park was still open during the Old Timer’s game, so people in Monument Park were yelling and waving at Bernie. He turned and waved to them.

~~ Yankees 6, Rockies 4 ~~

Our seats were in the bleachers 4 rows back from the bull pen, which meant when Mike Harkey came out and started throwing baseball in to the seats I got a good picture of him. It also meant bleacher creatures, roll call, full on sun, heat and a headache. I thought I was going to die, it didn’t help that the Rockies were hitting home runs off Nova. He wasn’t pitching bad, just made a few mistakes and got hit hard for them. I got up to walk around, found a cool breeze in a shaded spot, bought a soda and took some headache medicine. I came back to a 3-0 score, Rockies. After I got back Sarah left to go to the bathroom. Cano got the first Yankee hit of the day and was on base, things happen when we go to the bathroom. Then she sends me a text message asking if I want ice cream, before I can reply, “BOOM” my sweet Nicky hits a two run home run (he knew I was there) into the seats. Before she got back to the seats with the ice cream Jorge hit a home run and the game was tied.

It was starting to get cooler, there was some cloud cover and a breeze. I was also now in a better mood, so much so that even Ty Wigginton’s 2nd homer didn’t upset me. The boys were hitting the ball now. In the bottom of the sixth the Yankees tied it up again with a RBI single by Alex. In the seventh inning Jorge walked, then Martin got a single, he smacked that ball so hard and the short stop couldn’t get a handle on it, it was ruled an error though. Then Chris Dickerson replaced Jorge at second and on a single by Nunez he scored. I turned to Sarah, “That’s why Girardi put him in.” She smiled, I don’t know if she heard me, she was smiling at the fact that this was the first time in the game the Yankees were in the lead.

We started down to the great hall in the eighth. At first she wanted to stay because, “I want a home run ball.” Then she decided it wasn’t going to happen. Before we started down she needed the bathroom and walked ahead of me toward them. I glanced at the T.V. as I walked past it and noted that Mark Teixeira was batting. Earlier I had said I didn’t want Mark hitting a home run because I was behind in my donations to his charity. Sarah told me if Mark hit a home run she would give me the money. Remember what I said earlier about things happening? As I turned to follow her into the bathroom I heard the unmistakable sound of the crowd reacting to a home run. I ran to the top of the stairs and saw Mark running around the bases, and then I ran into the bathroom shouting, “Sarah! You owe me $15!” She came out with a big grin on her face. “Going to the bathroom works.” She said as she dug the money out of her purse. As we walked to the stairs the crowd roared again, this time for Mo. We went down to the great hall, watched Mo shut the door on the big screen, then left to get dinner.

It’s a tossup what I enjoyed more, this game or hearing Mo call Michael Kay a “Big head”.

She was sad she didn’t get a home run ball from Curtis, but happy the Yankees won.

No haters or blame casters ~ Friday, June 3, 2011

~~ Angels 3, Yankees 2 ~~

Yes, the Yankees lost and Nova gets the loss but let’s not just blame him. I get so sick of people who have to blame someone. Giradi is to blame for letting him stay in too long, or taking him out to soon, or for consulting his binder when he should have gone with his gut. Or Girardi doesn’t know baseball and shouldn’t be managing a team. I mean he only managed them to one world series!

Or it’s the offense, no one is hitting the ball, or they’re not hitting hard enough, or they’re hitting it in the wrong spot! Or it’s Swisher’s fault, he’s not hitting enough home runs, or doubles or triples. Let’s send him to the minors, or back to Chicago or make him fold towels. And put Dickerson in right field instead of Swisher, put Swisher on the bench he’s useless! I actually read a comment on mlb.com that said, “dump posada.swisher, jones, jeter, and get at least one reliable left hand releiver.” Like none of them are doing anything and Logan is unreliable. I know Logan’s ERA is high, but there is time for him to heat up.

Nova did not pitch great, but as David Cone said, Young pitchers have to get experience pitching in the big leagues. Yankees are not 10 games behind, so now is the time to let him pitch and get his experience. And he is getting better.

The bottom line is, the Yankees lost because they scored 2 runs and the Angels scored 3 and that is the end of the story. Losses happen, like shit happens. You get up, pull up your big girl panties and go on. Tomorrow is another day and another game.

Free baseball at Safeco field ~ May 28

~~Mariners 5, Yankees 4~~

As I type this the Yankees and Mariners just finished the 10th inning and the score is tied 4-4. I’m not going into the details of the game, I know I don’t do very well with play by play so I will just skip it. This week has been a very shitty week for me, I broke my phone on Monday and the insurance company sent me the wrong one as a replacement. I have it all packed up to return because I haven’t been able to get a hold anyone at the insurance company that can help me. I am fully expecting them to completely fuck things up and charge me all kinds of money for restocking etc. My next phone is not going to be an iPhone. I definitely don’t deserve nice things. On to the game, which is making me doubly sad since I was already in a pissy mood when it started.

Teixeira hit home run number 15, that’s $225 total for his charity.

Chris Dickerson takes over for Nick Swisher at first plate (running).

Dickerson was trying to steal second when Gardner hit the ball, so he was able to get to second, no double play. 2 outs, Jeter is up. 3 outs, Dickerson is stranded.

Seattle catcher dove into first base and totally cut up his face. Not smart, they are playing hard, want to end this game.

Ayala struck out batter number 2. Fielded the next hit, throw to Cano was in time. Jeter throws to Mark for the last out.

Top of the 12th: 2:12 a.m.: Granderson up at bat, Mariners have a new catcher. Granderson flies out, this field is too big, bring in the center field wall so Yankees can win and I can go to bed. Nope, Yankees go 1-2-3. I might have to go to bed and post an update tomorrow.

heh, Ichiro is 0-6

Mariano is in, I’m going to bed.

Pie! Pie! Pie! ~ May 24

~~ Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4 ~~

Normally I only break out the fireworks for a series win, but this win was so amazing, a walk-off! I can’t give the boys any pie, so they get fireworks.

Russell Martin seemed to get things started in the second with a home run, but then the Blue Jays tied it up, then scored 3 runs in the 3rd off CC. He came back and pitched scoreless for the rest of the game. He pitched a complete game, 8 hits-4 runs, so he gets the win. The Yankees were also scoreless from Russell’s home run until the 8th. Then they scored 2 runs putting the score Blue Jays 4, Yankees 3

Ninth inning Jorge started things off with a double. He was pinch hitting for Nunez, then Dickerson ran for him, Jeter struck out (correction, I am watching the encore, Jeter grounded out). I got sent to the basement, it was fine, I had finished my tea and ice cream. Then Granderson got on base and brought Dickerson home, tie game. With two outs Mark came up to bat, Granderson stole 2nd, Mark got a single, he made sure he stayed on first so as to not get thrown out and Granderson scored the winning run. He got 4 hits and scored 2 runs. A.J. snuck up on Mark to give him got pie, but he ducked. Brat.

Jose Bautista was 0-4 against Sabathia.

Wacky wacky game

~~Yankees 4, Orioles 1~~

After Bartolo Colon pitches 8 innings of shut out baseball then hands the ball over to Mariano, would you think the game would go to 15 innings? Well of course not, Mariano doesn’t blow saves, does he? Actually this is the second in a row at Camden yards. Maybe Mariano has a psychological problem with orange. Maybe he subconsciously fears huge stuffed birds. Who knows. But he is so cool about it, afterwards saying it was a great game, the offense, the pitchers, everything was great, well except the part he played. We have entered the twilight zone when the only run the other team gets is off Mariano Rivera.

After Rivera blew the save, the score would stay at 1-1 until the 15th. Luis Ayala and Boone Logan pitched the next two innings scoreless. Then Hector Noesi in his major league debut, pitches 4 scoreless innings and gets the win. With a little help from his buddy Cano, who told him, ‘You owe me dinner.’

It seemed like every inning, in the extra innings, men were getting on base, for both teams. As opposed to during the first nine when Colon was retiring batters consistently. Finally in the 15th inning, with Mark and Alex on base, Robbie told Long, I’m going up and just swinging. Mark and Alex both came around to score. Robbie was on third.

Bizaro Yankee world, a hit to the helmet of Chris Dickerson (who had come in the game to replace Swisher in right field) after Robbie batted lead to the umpire throwing out the pitcher. He was the last bullpen pitcher the Orioles had. So one of their starters had to warm up. And A.J. pitch ran for Dickerson. When Joe was asked why he used A.J., he said something, I think he has the most experience running the bases. But when you think about, he couldn’t use any pitcher that had already been in the game. He couldn’t use CC (pitching tomorrow, among other considerations), he wanted D-Rob available in case Noesi ran into problems, cause I’m sure Joe was determined that since the Yankees had scored runs, the game was not going into a sixteenth inning. So A.J. was the only logical choice. Then Cano scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett.

The next inning started with a single, a walk, an out, the next ball was a ground ball single, but the runner got hit by the ball, so that was the second out. Then a fly out to Nunez in right field, who had been at short stop for all of the game up to that inning. He was replacing Dickerson. A wacky exciting game to the end. Most importantly, Yankees win.

The streak is broken ~ happy dancing ~ May 17

This past weekend, I had a terrible nightmare. I dreamed the Yankees were swept by the Red Sox. Shhhhhh.

Did I not say that the Yankees would not lose forever? Tonight when they got the lead they held on to it. In what some are saying is an encouraging sign, they scored runs in the later innings. I admit it was frustrating to see them score 3 or 4 runs in the first or second, then none later in the game. That is what happened in the first game of the series, 2 runs in the second and 3 in the fifth, then when the Rays went ahead, they weren’t able to score any more, despite having opportunities. Tonight the Yankees kept scoring runs, even into the 9th inning. Last nights game was a debacle, but it is history now. Onward and upward Yanks, no looking back.

~~Yankees 6, Rays 2~~

Nova gave up one run, a home run, in the 3rd inning. He kept going, held the Rays to one run. He pitched 5-⅓ inning and picked up his 4th win. Robertson and Chamberlain each pitched 1-⅓ innings, giving up no runs, Sanit pitched ⅔ of the ninth inning, after giving up a run, Mo came in to finish the game. Since the Yankees were up 4 runs by this point, not considered a save situation. That greedy offense, scoring 2 runs in the ninth so Mariano wouldn’t get a save.

Alex hit two home runs (they come in bunches!), the first tied the game, the second put the Yankees ahead. And then they did that thing they do, tacking on insurance runs. 2 in the 7th, then 2 in the 9th. And Jorge? Jorge got 2 hits. Yay Sado. He didn’t get the run, only because Nunez pinch ran for him.

Swisher had a fever, he was replaced in right field by Chris Dickerson, just called up from Scranton, he also batted in a runner. So after a couple of miserable, WTF? games, this game was a joy to watch.
