It was time ~ Sunday, June 19, 2011

Time for what you say? Time for the Yankees to hit a home run at Wrigley field. This was posted on Twitter,

@BryanHoch RT @YankeesWFAN: Last Yankee to hit a home run at Wrigley Field–Robin Ventura.

If this is right, that was in 2002/03, since that was the only time he played for the Yankees. Of course, I think that is the last time the Yankees played at Wrigley Field. The announcers kept talking about Alex’s home runs and that he had NEVER hit a home run at Wrigley (he still hasn’t by the way), he’s played maybe three games at Wrigley, before this series.

Since I had no idea who Robin Ventura was I went on MLB and did a search, he played for the White Sox from 1989 to 1998, Mets from 1999 to 2001, Yankees in 2002 and then with the Yankees and Dodgers for 2003. While I was searching for his stats, I found this video, and since I absolutely love Nolan Ryan (cough cough), I had to post the link. It is an epic clip.

Ventura challenges Ryan

~~ Yankees 10, Cubs 4 ~~

Gardner was the lead off hitter and his first at bat he hit a home run. Just boom, into the stands. Then the Cubs tied it up, in the 3rd the Cubs hit CC hard and got 3 runs off him, by the sixth inning the Yankees had managed to tie the game, CC was holding the Cubs to four runs. Then in the 8th inning, with 2 men on base, Swisher came up to bat. His dad played for the Cubs, and BOOM went the baseball. Swisher doesn’t usually show off, but he just dropped his bat dramatically before he started around the bases. We were up by 3 now, in the ninth inning Mariano started tossing the ball around. This was after he made a little kid a fan for life. He went over to the wall and was talking to him, signed a baseball, shook his dad and his hand. The kid was just beaming after.

Then in the ninth Yankees added three more runs. One of them was a long fly ball that just missed being a home run, except it didn’t go out, it fell right in front of the wall and rolled into the ivy, and the two fielders were standing there looking at it. I was laughing. I laughed harder when a ball bounced off Ramiro Pena’s chest and Nunez picked it up and threw it in the dirt. Cano was standing there giving him a WTF? look.

So no Mariano, but as someone said, we only get to humiliate the Cubs every six years or so. Marquez came in for the ninth inning. Missed a catch at first base, but that was his only bobble. In fact, I think the next batter hit into a double play. Maybe not.

Whatever, CC gets the win, Yankees win the series.

Yankees sweep the Twins ~ and I’m (sad) happy

~~Yankees 6, Twins 1~~

Kasey and I were in the city, we both had massage appointments. We were on the train home when the game started. Kasey gets Twitter posts from Bryan Hoch on her phone. Before the game she asks me, “So do we be good fans and hope Phil has a good day? Or be selfish fans and hope he melts down?” My answer to her was, “We hope Phil has a good day, but we hope the bats fall asleep.” Its his first start and I didn’t want him crying in the dugout. I hate when pitchers cry. With her first tweet from Bryan she turns to me with a pout, “Phil with a 1-2-3 inning.” We got home during the 4th inning Brian Duensing had just been replaced by Matt Guerrier and the score was 5-0 Yankees. So I did have to look at a pitcher crying in the dugout, it wasn’t Phil, but it still made me sad, as did the knowledge that I wouldn’t be going to a postseason game the next day.

Phil picked a great night to get filthy. Seven shut-out innings, and our bats were alive from the beginning. The Yankees broke a streak of sorts by jumping ahead of the Twins from the start. Normally the Twins score first. In the eighth inning the Twins attempted a rally of sorts, taking advantage of Kerry Wood’s lack of command and loading up the bases. Joe quickly pulled him and put in Boone Logan (who got his batter out with 1 pitch) and then David “High Socks” Robertson to end the inning. Twins scored one run.

That was it, Mariano came in the ninth, stick a fork in the Twins, they’re done and the Yankees are ALDS champions. So do I get a shirt now, or wait for the next round?

Spring Training

I have not been able to watch any of the Spring Training games since I have to work and my boss won’t let me watch MLB on my work computer. He is such a pain! I have been keeping track of the games though.

There are three ways I do this, one is through Twitter. I follow Mark Feinsand, he covers the Yankees for the NY Daily News. His twitter id is BloggingBombers. I also follow Marc Carig who provides real-time coverage of the New York Yankees for The Star-Ledger and NJ.com and his twitter id is Ledger_Yankees. And last but not least I Bryan Hoch, BryanHoch who is an MLB.com beat writer, there is a link to his blog in my sidebar, go check it out. I have his tweets sent to my phone. Now in case these guys stop tweeting (which has happened) my second way to keep track is through Mobile MLB.

Since that really wears down my battery, I have started taking my power cord to work, and when I get my smart phone in April, it will be so much better. Of course then it will be regular season and I will be watching in the evening, I think most of the games are in the evening, I haven’t really checked. Right now trying to get through Spring Training.

The third way is through my subscription to Yankee Text Alerts. They send me text messages on important plays and the final score. During regular season I get the score every 3 innings.

So that is how I am getting my Yankee fix right now.

Bryan Hoch also post pictures on Twitpic, that is where I got this picture.

Nick Swisher on Twitpic My sweet Nicky!
