New York Yankees at Kansas City ~ Monday, August 15, 2011

~~ Yankees 7, Royals 4 ~~

There are boxes all over my apartment, and as I unpack I keep discovering I need things. This night it was plastic bags to store my winter stuff in. I don’t know what I will do with them when winter is here. That is why I was watching this game in a little Italian restaurant on Lexington. As I ate dinner AJ lost the lead, I was mad and said, “He’s gonna lose the game.” Before I left the restaurant however, the Yankees regained the lead, and never lost it.

So A.J. gets his first win in August as a Yankee. I am so glad to see he got run support, from Brett, Derek Andruw, and Mark. All of them with RBI tonight.

First game of the series goes to the Yankees. Good start.

New York Yankees at Boston ~ Saturday, August 6, 2011

~~ Red Sox 10, Yankees 4 ~~

Despite a home run by Mark Teixeira and a stolen base by Curtis Granderson; even though we had the big man on the mound, Red Sox won this one. Very disappointing. In fact, CC only pitched 6 innings and gave up 7 runs. Lackey was in his usual form, hitting Robinson Cano and Gardner. Before you think I am picking on Lackey because he’s a Red Sox and ugly (both are true), the Red Sox lead the MLB in hit batsmen. Look it up.

And another headline for the ages

“G-men push Yankees past O’s in series finale”

~~ Yankees 4, Orioles 2 ~~

No I did not make that up, it is copied straight from MLB.com, seriously who comes up with this? I get it, Freddy Garcia pitched 6 solid innings only giving up 2 runs, Gardner had a base clearing triple, but really “G-men”? That deserves a “SMH”.

The problem I have with headlines like that is it makes it seem like the whole game was on their shoulders, and while yes, Gardner had 3 of the 4 RBI, he wasn’t the only player out there, and Garcia only pitched 6 innings, there were 3 other pitchers that held the O’s to 2 runs. So lets give Hector, Dave, and Mo credit where it is due for doing their part.

Fun or boring game? ~ Friday, July 22, 2011

~~ Yankees 17, Athletics 7 ~~

Some people think blowouts are fun, they like seeing their team win by 10 or 20 runs, some people say they are boring. Apparently Phil Hughes thinks they are boring since he let the A’s score 7 runs. Hector Noesi apparently thinks they’re fun since he held them to the seven runs they already had and picked up his second win, his record is now 2-0 with a 2.91 ERA. As bad as Phil was today, he was better then Trevor Cahill, who doesn’t have a bad ERA, just seems to fall apart against the Yankees. He pitched 2 innings, gave up 9 hits, 10 runs, walked 2, had two stolen bases and watched two balls make it into the seats, one with the bases loaded.

Nick and Mark hit the home runs, Nick’s was a 3 run, Mark’s a grand slam and the following players all joined the party. Nunez, Gardner, Jeter (3), Granderson (2), Swisher (5), Teixeira (4), Laird. Laird just got called up, his first major league hit was also a major league RBI.

What camp do I fall in with regards to high scoring games? If it’s the Yankees batting around, fun fun fun!!

Phil is looking better ~ Sunday, July 17, 2011

~~ Yankees 7, Blue Jays 2 ~~

When I saw Phil Hughes ERA (10.57) I almost cried, almost because he was on the D.L. for a reason. It was also an almost because at the time the score was 5-2 (YAY), and now Phil’s ERA is 8.44 and his WHIP is 1.73, which I don’t quite understand, I just know that it should be closer to 1.00, which I am sure is the direction it is going now. Phil’s line was 6 innings pitched, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 5 K’s. Welcome back Phil.
โ€ƒ
Cory Wade and David both pitched hitless inning and then Boone came in for the 9th (Boone Logan for closer, don’t panic I’m just kidding), I guess since it wasn’t a save situation and Mo threw almost 30 pitches yesterday Joe decided Boone could handle it, and he did.

Phil also got run support from Swisher, Martin, Granderson, Cano and Pena (yes, Pena). Plenty of run support, surprisingly not from our regular guys. However, I will take it. On to Tampa and more playing on fake grass and dirt. Blech.

CC comes through ~ Saturday, July 16, 2011

~~ Yankees 4, Blue Jays 1 ~~

As expected CC held the Blue Jays to 1 run and got enough run support to win. Big Stoppa stopped the losing streak. I still think the fake grass is affecting them though.

CC pitched 8 innings, once again saving the bull pen and now has 14 wins this season and Mariano picks up his 23rd save.

Jones, Nunez and Jeter all brought in runs, Brett Gardner is up to 24 stolen bases and Nunez now has 12 errors. *heavy sigh* Oh and Cervelli also stole a base. No Cervelli hate here, not allowed.

It was time ~ Sunday, June 19, 2011

Time for what you say? Time for the Yankees to hit a home run at Wrigley field. This was posted on Twitter,

@BryanHochย RTย @YankeesWFAN: Last Yankee to hit a home run at Wrigley Field–Robin Ventura.

If this is right, that was in 2002/03, since that was the only time he played for the Yankees. Of course, I think that is the last time the Yankees played at Wrigley Field. The announcers kept talking about Alex’s home runs and that he had NEVER hit a home run at Wrigley (he still hasn’t by the way), he’s played maybe three games at Wrigley, before this series.

Since I had no idea who Robin Ventura was I went on MLB and did a search, he played for the White Sox from 1989 to 1998, Mets from 1999 to 2001, Yankees in 2002 and then with the Yankees and Dodgers for 2003. While I was searching for his stats, I found this video, and since I absolutely love Nolan Ryan (cough cough), I had to post the link. It is an epic clip.

Ventura challenges Ryan

~~ Yankees 10, Cubs 4 ~~

Gardner was the lead off hitter and his first at bat he hit a home run. Just boom, into the stands. Then the Cubs tied it up, in the 3rd the Cubs hit CC hard and got 3 runs off him, by the sixth inning the Yankees had managed to tie the game, CC was holding the Cubs to four runs. Then in the 8th inning, with 2 men on base, Swisher came up to bat. His dad played for the Cubs, and BOOM went the baseball. Swisher doesn’t usually show off, but he just dropped his bat dramatically before he started around the bases. We were up by 3 now, in the ninth inning Mariano started tossing the ball around. This was after he made a little kid a fan for life. He went over to the wall and was talking to him, signed a baseball, shook his dad and his hand. The kid was just beaming after.

Then in the ninth Yankees added three more runs. One of them was a long fly ball that just missed being a home run, except it didn’t go out, it fell right in front of the wall and rolled into the ivy, and the two fielders were standing there looking at it. I was laughing. I laughed harder when a ball bounced off Ramiro Pena’s chest and Nunez picked it up and threw it in the dirt. Cano was standing there giving him a WTF? look.

So no Mariano, but as someone said, we only get to humiliate the Cubs every six years or so. Marquez came in for the ninth inning. Missed a catch at first base, but that was his only bobble. In fact, I think the next batter hit into a double play. Maybe not.

Whatever, CC gets the win, Yankees win the series.

A little bit of run support ~ Saturday, June 18, 2011

~~ Yankees 4, Cubs 3 ~~

Just fooling around with the logo from the MLB site, don’t tell them.

So A.J. got a little bit of run support, this time it was enough. My buddy Russell stole a base, Nunez made another error, #8 for the year. Gardner threw the ball into home from left field and Russell tagged the runner out, even though the runner ran into him and knocked him down. Russell got up and showed him the ball. It was one of the three double plays the Yankees turned.

Ballgame over, Yankees win.

This is how we want it to end ~ Thursday, June 16, 2011

~~ Yankees 3, Rangers 2 ~~

Yankees have won another series. This time with a bunch of home runs. Well not in this game. But we did get another corny headline: “Broom for three: Gardner, Yanks sweep Rangers”. We also got a look at a new pitcher, Brian Gordon, who despite not getting the win made a good first impression, holding the Rangers to 2 runs. Unfortunately, the Yankees were not getting the hits. C.J. Wilson was doing his job for the Rangers.

So there was free baseball in the Bronx, this was definitely a hard won win with the game going to 12 innings.

6 up, 6 down for Cory Wade

Bottom of the 12th: Granderson up, Base hit to right field
Mark Teixeira, fly out to left field, out #1
Robinson Cano, hit by pitch, takes first base, Granderson to second base
Brett Gardner, (and Sarah, listening to the radio, said, “Brett just hit the ball” and he always listens)
base hit, Granderson scores.

Yankees win. Time for pie. ๐Ÿ™‚ On to the Cubs for Interleague road trip!

Sometimes, the headlines are pretty funny ~ Tuesday, June 14, 2011

~~ Yankees 12, Rangers 4 ~~

This this one: “Job well done: Yanks solve righty Ogando”. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be a play on words, I’m a little bit clueless. I suppose they are referring to the fact that coming into this game Ogando hadn’t lost a game. The Yankees sure showed him who is boss of the Bronx, he gave up 6 runs in 1.2 innings. I would feel sorry for him, but he plays for the wrong team.

After not hitting much on Monday, the Yankee bats were really hot on Tuesday, Swisher, Granderson (hey Jose, Curtis says HI [stolen from @The_Stace]) and Cano. Curtis is now tied with Jose for most home runs. Gardner stole his 14th base of the season.

CC pitched and gave up 4 runs in 7 innings, not a problem with the twelve runs the Yankees scored (part of me wonders if A.J. is making a CC doll, just out of jealousy, or maybe putting ex-lax in his cocoa puffs?, Nah ….. ). There is a problem with me typing all my posts on one day, my thoughts just all run together and the games start to mesh, not to mention I am watching the encore showing of the current days game so things could get a little confusing, just bear with me. Ayala and Pendleton pitched scoreless innings, no Mo, these guys are just hitting to many runs.

And Texas likes to hit our batters too, I didn’t realize it was open season on baseball players.
